Touring Rowers celebrate 25 years 89 rowers from 19 clubs around the country came together on Saturday 10^th March for a celebration dinner at Leander Club, organised by the Recreational Rowing Committee (RRC) to mark the foundation of the BR /ARA Rowing tour. This has become a successful annual event which has increased participation in recreational rowing and opened up many new routes for touring on rivers, lakes and canals. The early tours were organised by Greg Gregory-Jones (Weybridge), Pip Lewendon and the late Pat Sherwin (Southsea) with assistance from Alan Meegan of the ARA. Both Greg and Pip attended the dinner and were presented with commemorative tankards by Luke Dillon, Chairman of the Thames Regional Rowing Council. John Turnbull, Chairman of the RRC, told the diners that the recently announced sponsorship from Charles Stanley Wealth Management would enable greater participation in future tours. Their boats will be used on this year's 25^th tour, which will take place on the Upper Thames from 30^th August to 2^nd September. Photos here British Rowing news item Charles Stanley Wealth Management sponsors recreational rowing A sponsorship deal worth approx £100k over 3 years between British Rowing and Charles Stanley Wealth Management has been agreed which will enable the provision of vital additional equipment to support the staging of recreational rowing events. "Recreational rowing" provides opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to learn to row and take part in a range of challenge, skill and touring events, using boats that are more stable than "fine" racing boats. This class of boat was introduced to clubs a few years ago by the Explore Rowing project but more capacity is needed to stage events. The BR Recreational Rowing Committee (RRC) developed the proposal with Charles Stanley for packages of 4 coxed quad touring boats with blades and trailer that could be taken around clubs to enable them to run courses or events. Two packages will be delivered this year, one to be based in the Thames Valley and hosted by Goring Gap BC near Pangbourne and the other based at Isle of Ely RC near Cambridge.
